“Then you be the Pravus. I’m too tired to reign over vampirekind, let alone enslave the entire human race.” - Vlad, 10th Grade Bleeds

Vladimir Tod is the titular protagonist of The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. He is the half-vampire son of Tomas and Melina Tod, and a godlike entity referred to as the Pravus. The series follows his adventures from 8th grade to graduation, and his struggles to come to term with the loss of his parents, the homicidal vampires chasing him, betrayal, and his half-vampire identity.

Appearance[]

Vlad is described as a pale, lanky boy with long almost shoulder-length black hair and dark eyes, though the exact color is unknown. He is described as a smaller version of his father, which would imply that he has almost the exact same features. In the cover art, he is shown as having slightly narrow eyes. It is presumed that he wears the clothes depicted in the cover art. His eyes flash purple when using his Pravus powers, when he's drinking from the source, or in contact with glyphs. His eyes sometimes shine on their own. Vlad’s eye colors outside of this, however, are mostly left up to speculation, though most likely brown or black.

In the graphic novel, Vlad is depicted as having short black hair that covers his left eye. He is commonly seen wearing t-shirts with phrases such as "I'm pissed off and you look like just enough xp to level up" and "They say I have a gaming problem, like that is a bad thing.", gray jackets and jeans. His eyes are depicted as a dark grayish blue.

Personality[]

Vlad is almost average for a teenage boy in respects to his personality and interests, he’s fond of video games and having fun with his friends when time allows. He’s shown to have a sarcastic sense of humor, cracking jokes from time to time, even when facing down threats.

Very much the typical underdog of the story, Vlad has a somewhat heroic personality that comes out when those he loves or others around him are in danger, facing off against any threats, from his school bullies to centuries old vampires, even going so far as to kill for them. Despite this, he actively refuses to participate in hunting under the basis that he finds it immoral. Vlad tends to struggle with jealousy, which is noted in 9th Grade Slays and 10th Grade Bleeds, revolving around Joss and Meredith, and then Henry respectively.

Role[]

Ninth Grade Slays[]

Vlad wakes up the sound of a fly buzzing around his head. He slaps it when it lands on Henry to wake him up. Afterwards, the pair head downstairs, following the smell of breakfast. Henry asks Vlad about calling Meredith, to which he sheepishly admits trying twice, but never succeeding in talking to her, then they smoke on a crack pipe.

Vlad received a letter from Otis, offering advice on telepathy, mind control, and how to get girls, though Vlad is distinctly disappointed by the letter.

Nelly briefly mentions some soon to expire blood at the hospital, stating that she needs to stock up due to Vlad’s growing hunger.

During a conversation with Henry about school, and the arrival of his cousin Joss, Vlad feels particularly worried about not getting along well with him.

From there, Vlad and Henry sit down in the den to spend their weekend playing video games, to which Vlad loses.

Henry asks Vlad if he ever thinks he’ll start feeding on humans, To which Vlad states, “The day I start feeding on humans is the day I’ll beat you at video games,” To which Henry quips that it won’t ever happen.

The first day of school arrives, and the morning of, Vlad is getting ready. As he gathers his things, he briefly remembers a new bag he had his eye on, before deciding against it, due to the emotional attachment he had to his old one.

Before he leaves his room, he starts to put the Lucis into his pocket, before changing his mind last minute and setting it down on the dresser, before going down to eat.

Nelly asks Vlad before he leaves if he remembers to wear sunscreen, to which, Vlad makes a joke before meeting up with Henry on the way to school. When he meets Joss at first glance, Vlad thinks he’s good-looking, and the “strong, silent type.”

As Henry parts to join the popular kids, a brief conversation ensues between Vlad and Joss, with Vlad deciding that he’d enjoy Joss’s company just fine and even got high with him.

After Henry and Joss set off, Vlad is attacked by Bill and Tom, who shove him against the school wall but Vlad pulls out a switch blade and stabs them multiple times, killing Bill and injuring Tom, Vlad hides the knife and isn't caught, and goes home since school is cancelled due to the stabbing.

The next day Meredith Brookstone walks by, catching Vlad’s attention, and much to his dismay, Joss’s as well.

Together, they head into the school, where Henry takes the time to ask Vlad if the crosses on the wall at Bathory High (which had once been a church) had any effect on him. Vlad responds in the negative, stating he’d never given any religion much mind in that aspect.

Greg, Henry’s older brother, meets up with them, offering to show Vlad the ropes and to let the upperclassmen know not to pick on Vlad or Henry.

As a vampire, Vlad has many supernatural abilities, some of which are heightened by his status as the Pravus.
